The Weeknd – Live in Calgary

ImageThe mysterious and sultry Abel Tesfaye AKA The Weeknd played the Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary this past Thursday and I must say I was impressed. Amidst the screaming girls and women, the showmanship and stunning vocals of The Weeknd gave me flashbacks of Michael Jackson. While The Weeknd might never be able to touch the success the King of Pop, I must say that Tesfaye is trying his hardest.

The show was equal parts an audio and visual experience. Projections and synchronized lights added a lot to the hyper modern RnB sound that the Weeknd is best known for. One part art show, one part rap video, the performance was surprisingly sexy AND artistic in a way that was just enough of both to make it great.

Not to be outdone by the visuals, the band that backed up the Weeknd was on point. Two backup singers, a guitarist, DJ/Keyboards and a drummer supported the internet sensation in a way that affirmed he’s more than just Drake’s BFF.

Speaking of Drake, this is the first time I’ve been to a concert with legit screaming girls. The show was all ages, so throngs of under-age suburban teens flocked to the venue and promptly began shrieking at every possible opportunity.

That being said, the presence of teeny-boppers didn’t detract from the show at all. We had floor seats and most of the desperate shrieking was coming from the balcony above. The sound was great, the light show was killer and it was all over before 11pm. Not a bad night for a show at the Jube.
